A 23-year-old student, Siddhant Rakshit, visiting the city with a friend for an entrance test, met a tragic end after reportedly being bitten by a snake near Downtown Mall in New Town Action Area III.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening as the pair were returning from the exam. Strangers helped them reach a nearby Primary Health Center, but the victim received inadequate treatment.

Eventually, Rakshit's friend rushed him to RG Kar Hospital and Medical College, but his condition worsened, and he passed away on Monday.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the case. According to police reports, Rakshit arrived at RG Kar Hospital late in the evening, with traffic police facilitating their entry through the green corridor. Despite efforts, the doctors declared him brought dead, and the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examinations.

The investigating officer recorded statements from Rakshit's friend and the driver of the car, while no foul play complaint has been filed by the family at this time.

New Town is known for frequent sightings of venomous snakes like the common krait and Russell's viper, especially during the summer and monsoon seasons due to its abundance of empty grassy land and bodies of water.

Interestingly, Elita Garden Vista, a residential complex near the mall, recently acquired 20 bottles of anti-snake venom serum to treat individuals bitten by poisonous snakes.
